For centuries, Europe looked east and saw not the Ottoman Empire as it was, but as it wished to imagine it — a world of harems, sultans, and timeless splendor rendered in the sumptuous brushwork of painters like Gérôme and Delacroix. This tour holds those images up against the art the Ottomans actually made: courtly miniatures, calligraphy, and Iznik ceramics governed by an entirely different visual logic, one of pattern, narrative clarity, and devotional purpose.
