Long-stay visa for other purposes, symbol D/AS, for digital nomads. Law 22/2022 added the category to GEO 194/2002. It is for third-country nationals. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals do not use it. The visa itself is 90 days, with one or more entries. File it on the eVisa portal, then appear in person at a Romanian diplomatic mission or consular office in the country of residence so the originals can be checked. The visa is approved only after an Inspectorate General for Immigration endorsement: at most 30 days from receipt, extendable by 15 days. You cannot start this visa inside Romania. After entry, apply for the temporary residence permit at least 30 days before the visa stay ends. The first digital-nomad permit is 6 months. Later extensions of temporary stay for other purposes are granted for up to one year at a time, while the conditions still hold. Later extensions also need an income certificate from the competent tax authority. No total cap, and no cooldown, is published. The in-country permit decision is a separate 30 days, extendable by 15. The means test is at least three times the Romanian average gross monthly salary for each of the last six months before the visa application and for the whole period written on the visa, and again at each extension. The statute does not publish a fixed lei or euro amount, and it does not say whether the multiplier is the annual social-insurance budget average or the monthly statistical average. The euro and dollar figures shown are an unverified approximation. Qualifying work is an employment contract with a company registered outside Romania, or remote administration, through information and communications technology, of a company the applicant has owned outside Romania for at least three years on the visa date. A freelancer without one of those two links does not qualify. The permit does not authorize employment in Romania and does not include a work authorization. There is no degree requirement. The criminal-record certificate comes from the country of origin and, where relevant, the country of legal residence and of the income. It must be apostilled or legalized and authentically translated into Romanian. The contract or company papers and a letter of intent also need authenticated Romanian translations. Accommodation must be proved. No minimum lease length is stated. Insurance of at least EUR 30,000 is required. On the same immigration page, the general long-stay list also asks for cover of medical repatriation, emergency treatment, emergency hospitalization or death, valid in every member state. The nomad-specific bullet still says cover valid in Romania of at least EUR 30,000. The long-stay visa fee is EUR 300 for eVisa applications validated from 27 April 2026. Filings validated before that date were EUR 120. The residence-permit stage is separate: a consular fee of EUR 120, paid in lei, plus RON 265 for the card. Salary and salary-equivalent income from the foreign job or foreign company, and pension and health contributions, stay outside Romanian tax only while presence does not exceed 183 days in any period of 12 consecutive months ending in the calendar year (Law 69/2023). This is not a multi-year exemption and not "the first 183 days" of the permit. Past that day count, ordinary Romanian tax rules apply. Family members are not added to the nomad visa. Family reunification (D/VF) needs a sponsor who holds a temporary residence permit valid for one year. Digital nomads are not on the list of people who may sponsor family with a shorter permit, and the first nomad permit is six months, so family can be requested only after a later one-year extension. Spouse and unmarried minor children are the core categories. Each family member's own long-stay visa is charged at the type D fee. Extra means of support are the national minimum gross wage per family member, on top of the sponsor's own means. There is no published nomad income uplift per dependent. Romania has been fully in Schengen since 1 January 2025, after air and sea borders on 31 March 2024. A Romanian residence permit allows travel in the rest of Schengen for up to 90 days in any 180. Whether nomad residence counts toward the five-year long-term residence period is not stated. There is no citizenship track in this visa.
