Nomad Watch

Our standards

What you can expect from every figure on Nomad Watch.

Nomad Watch helps people decide where to live and work abroad. That only works if you can rely on the numbers, so every figure we publish follows the same standards: researched with our own methods, taken from sources you can check, reviewed before it goes live and corrected in public.

What we publish

Costs of living, quality-of-life scores, visa and residency programs, tax rules and treaties, passports, embassies, events and communities for 3,169 cities in 250 countries. Each figure carries its unit, currency and period, and pages show when the data was last verified.

Where our data comes from

We use the most authoritative source available, in this order:

  • Official sources: government, immigration and tax authorities, official gazettes and statistics offices.
  • International organisations: such as the World Bank, Our World in Data, Transparency International, Reporters Without Borders and M-Lab.
  • Reputable secondary sources: only where no official source publishes the figure, and never in place of one.

Visa, tax and program pages list the sources behind them, and every change in our changelog names the source it came from. Across the site we cite 45,421 sources.

How figures are checked

We research with our own proprietary methods, built to compare cities and countries on equal terms. Every figure is checked against its source and reviewed before it is published. When sources disagree, we use the most authoritative one and note the conflict.

When we cannot confirm a figure, we say so: you will see "no data" or a clearly labelled estimate, never a placeholder presented as fact.

Keeping data current

Rules and prices change, so we update continuously. We published 6,481 updates in the last 30 days. Every update is listed in the public changelog, with the old and new value, the reason and the source, and in its RSS feed.

Corrections and right of reply

If you find an error, we want to hear about it. We check every report against the source, correct the figure and record the correction in the changelog. Programs, authorities and businesses we write about can ask for a correction or add context the same way.

Report an error

Use the contact form or the "Send feedback" link at the bottom of every page. Tell us the page, the figure and, if you have one, the source that shows the right value.

Independence

Nobody can pay to change a score, a ranking or a figure. Partner links are labelled as sponsored, appear at most once per page, and never affect what we publish. We do not use pop-ups or interstitials.

Rules, fees, tax rates and costs change, sometimes without notice, and can depend on your nationality, residence and circumstances.
