The oldest part of Barcelona is a maze of Roman remains, Gothic lanes, landmark squares, bars, and short-stay accommodation between La Rambla and Via Laietana. It delivers maximum atmosphere and effortless sightseeing, but crowds, pickpocketing, small flats, and late-night noise make it a weaker long-term work base.
