The applicant must show SEK 200,000 in their own name, transferable to Sweden, for two years, plus SEK 100,000 for a spouse or partner and SEK 50,000 for each child. Money to run or buy the business is extra, and loans are not normally accepted. There is no fixed investment amount. The fee is SEK 2,000 for the applicant, SEK 1,500 for an adult family member and SEK 750 for a child. Citizens of Japan pay no fee. USD figures use the Riksbank rate on 9 October 2026, 1 USD = 9.96564 SEK. A first permit and each extension last at most two years. After two years the holder can apply for permanent residence if taxed income from the business covers housing and, in 2026, SEK 6,243 a month left over for a single adult. From 6 June 2026, citizenship generally needs eight years of habitual residence, a permanent residence permit, and self-support of at least three income base amounts, SEK 250,200 in 2026. Applicants aged 16 to 66 need Swedish at B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing, plus knowledge of Swedish society. More than six weeks abroad in a year is deducted from habitual residence. Sweden allows dual citizenship. A first application is made from abroad, online, or on paper at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. Employment elsewhere is not allowed. The 1 June 2026 salary and insurance rules apply to work permits for employment, not to this permit. For incomplete first applications, 75 percent were decided within 11 months. The sample of complete applications is too small to publish a time.
