Essentials

City
Laxe (Spanish also uses Lage), a fishing town in the comarca of Bergantiños, province of A Coruña, on the south side of the ría de Corme e Laxe, in the middle of the Costa da Morte. The postcode is 15117. The municipality also includes the parishes of Serantes, Soesto, Nande, Sarces and Traba. 2 3
Population
2,883 inhabitants on 1 January 2025 (1,436 men and 1,447 women), the official municipal register. That is 36 fewer than on 1 January 2024. 1
Currency & Banking
Euro. On 19 October 2026 the ECB reference rate was 1 EUR = 1.1225 USD, so about 1 USD = €0.89. Cards are widely accepted, and some shops ask for photo identification with a card. 7 8
Tap Water
Safe to drink. The Spain travel guide says tap water is safe and of drinkable quality. It describes higher mineral content in some southern regions, not on this Atlantic coast. Ask for agua del grifo; some restaurants still charge for bottled water. 7
Power
230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko). 7
SIM Card
Buy a prepaid SIM at an Orange or Movistar shop; identification is required, and no operator shop in Laxe was confirmed. Orange Prepago 10 is €10 (80 GB with the current extra, 15 GB of EU roaming, SIM or eSIM). Movistar Prepago Plus is €10 for 28 days (60 GB) and Prepago Premium is €15 for 28 days (240 GB). 5 6 7
Banking for Expats
No bank branch in the village was confirmed. Cards are widely accepted in Spain, and most ATMs take a foreign card. The Spain travel guide put the extra ATM fee at about €2 to €7 in February 2023, with exceptions at some banks. 7
Accommodation
Fotocasa asking rent for the municipality in October 2026 was 10 €/m². A 45 m² flat at that rate is about €450 a month. Declared rental contracts in 2024 had a median of €297 a month, on a typical flat of 98 m² (3.14 €/m²). 9 11
Cashless Friendly
Cards are widely accepted in Spain. Tipping is not required. In a mid-range restaurant, 5 to 10% is for especially good service, and it is handed over in cash. 7
Short Term Rentals
The town lodging list includes Hotel Playa de Laxe, a three-star hotel at Avenida Cesáreo Pondal 27, about 20 steps from the beach, and Hotel Mar de Laxe at Rúa Rosalía de Castro 64. Cabanas Narea rents five cabins among the trees by the beach. A nightly rate was not on those pages. 12 13 15
