Temporary stay for a third-country national who is not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and who works through communication technology for a company, or for their own company, that is not registered in Croatia. Work or services for employers in Croatia are not allowed. This is an approval of temporary stay, not a work permit. A national who needs a visa to enter must apply at a Croatian diplomatic mission or consulate and, once approved, obtain a long-stay D visa. An in-country application from a visa-required national is rejected. A visa-exempt national may apply online, at a mission, or at the police station for the intended address, and may stay until the decision is enforceable. The stay is granted for up to 18 months, and it may be shorter. A shorter grant may be extended once, by at most six months, filed in person at the police station no later than 60 days before expiry. The total, including that extension, cannot exceed 18 months. A new digital-nomad application, a stay for other purposes, or family reunification with a digital nomad can be filed only six months after the earlier stay expires. Means of subsistence are at least 2.5 times the previous year's average monthly net salary. For 2026 that is €3,622.50 a month, from the 2025 average of €1,449. A bank balance of €43,470 covers a 12-month stay, or €65,205 an 18-month stay. Each additional family member, life partner or informal life partner adds 10% of the average net salary, €144.90 a month. Proof is a bank statement for the whole stay, a statement of regular income, or payslips for at least six months. At a police station the fee is paid after the stay is granted: €46.45 for granting temporary stay, €9.29 to issue the biometric permit and €31.85 for the card, or €59.73 if the card is issued in the accelerated procedure. At a diplomatic mission or consulate it is paid on application: €55.74 for granting temporary stay, plus €93 for a D visa or €41.14 for the biometric card. The family-reunification page does not publish a separate fee for relatives. Receipts from employment or self-employment for an employer that is not registered in Croatia, earned on the basis of digital-nomad status, are not taxable income (Income Tax Act, article 9(1)(26), Official Gazette 138/20). Dividends, rent and other income are outside that exemption. Tax residence can still arise from a dwelling held, or from a stay of, at least 183 days in one calendar year or across two. Close family may apply to join only after this stay has been granted. An application filed before that is rejected. A spouse qualifies, as does a common-law partner of at least three years, or a shorter partnership if the couple have a child together. A hotel or hostel reservation is accepted as the address on a first application. The address must be registered within three days of entry, and within 30 days of the start of the stay, or within six months if a D visa is required, or the stay is revoked. A legalised criminal-record certificate is required for the first grant, from the home country or a country of residence for more than a year immediately before arrival, and is not required on extension. Health insurance must cover Croatia. No degree is required.
