The White Card is a residence permit for a third-country national who works from Hungary with digital technology, either in a verified job outside Hungary or as a share owner who works in or manages a profitable company outside Hungary. It is not a Hungarian work permit. Working for a Hungarian employer, or taking a share in a Hungarian company, is grounds for withdrawal. Someone who already qualifies for another Hungarian permit, including guest self-employment, guest investor, employment or a guest-worker permit, cannot be given a White Card. Government Decree 35/2024 (II. 29.), section 52(4), treats subsistence as proved when lawful net income reaches EUR 3,000 in every one of the six months before the application and in every month of the stay. The immigration factsheet states the same EUR 3,000 net figure for at least six months before entry. Proof is a bank statement for those six months, or a certificate of regular income from the employer or the tax authority. Neither the decree nor the factsheet sets a lump-sum savings test. The annual figure stored here is twelve times the monthly threshold. The dollar amounts were left at the earlier conversion: at the ECB reference rate of 1.1186 dollars per euro on 8 October 2026, EUR 3,000 is about $3,356, which is under 10% away from the stored $3,240. The card is issued for at most one year and may be extended once, for the same purpose, for at most one more year. An extension is filed only on Enter Hungary, from inside Hungary, no earlier than 90 days and no later than 30 days before expiry, and only if the holder spent at least 90 days in Hungary in any 180-day period beforehand. The passport must remain valid for at least three months after the permit expires. The approval lapses if the holder does not enter Hungary within three months. Family reunification is refused, including while the application is still pending. The exception is a child born in Hungary during the permit, after the birth is reported. Holders cannot receive a national residence card, and time on a White Card does not count toward one. During the permit and after it expires, a residence permit for a different purpose cannot be requested in Hungary. Visa-required nationals apply at a Hungarian mission in the country of nationality or habitual residence. That application includes the single-entry D visa used to collect the card: a stay of at most 30 days, visa valid for three months. Visa-exempt nationals may apply during a lawful stay in Hungary, on Enter Hungary or in person at the regional directorate for their accommodation. The card is posted to the address on the form. The fee factsheet and Interior Ministry Decree 10/2024 (II. 29.) charge EUR 110 at a mission for the permit and the collection visa, HUF 39,000 for an in-person application in Hungary, HUF 26,000 on Enter Hungary, and HUF 26,000 to extend. An appeal filed at a mission costs EUR 160. The stored fee is the EUR 110 mission charge. At the 8 October 2026 ECB rate that is about $123, within 10% of the stored $119, so the dollar figure was not rewritten. At the same rate, HUF 26,000 is about $79 and HUF 39,000 is about $119. Procedural administration is 21 days, and a decision on the merits is due within 30 days of submission. Time spent supplying missing documents is not included. Accommodation may be a lease, courtesy housing, proof of ownership, or a paid reservation. No minimum lease term is stated. Healthcare is comprehensive insurance or proof that the applicant can pay for care. There is no degree requirement. There is no digital-nomad tax regime. The National Tax and Customs Administration's 2026 summary states a 15% personal income tax, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. A third-country national who is not settled is not resident merely by holding this permit. The Personal Income Tax Act then looks at a permanent home, the centre of vital interests, and habitual residence, and a treaty can change where the income is taxed. EEA nationals and their family members are outside this permit. Stateless persons can qualify.
