Notes and caveats

The long-stay visa is normally requested through the Spanish mission or consular office for the applicant's place of residence at least two months before studies start. The maximum decision period is one month, subject to extensions where permitted. For higher-education studies, an adult who is legally in Spain may apply for the study-stay authorization from within Spain. An authorization begins one month before the activity and ends 15 days after it; an authorization lasting over one year requires annual proof of continued enrolment. Higher-education and post-compulsory secondary cases can receive up to two extensions; training and volunteering cases generally only one, subject to category rules. The visa fee varies by nationality, reciprocity and consular post. Study stay is not residence for long-term residence counting. Spanish citizenship and permanent-residence eligibility depend on later qualifying residence; the usual general residence periods are subject to nationality-specific exceptions.
