Eligible full-time degree-level students sponsored by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance may work up to 20 hours/week during term and full-time during vacations. Eligible below-degree students may work up to 10 hours/week during term; some study/sponsor combinations allow no work. Students cannot be self-employed, fill a permanent full-time vacancy (except in specified visa-switch cases), or work as professional sportspersons/coaches or entertainers. The visa grant records the individual's work conditions.

Dependants are allowed for government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months, and for full-time postgraduate students on courses of at least 9 months. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course must be a doctorate or research-based higher degree. Taught master's and undergraduate students are not eligible unless government-sponsored.
