Resolução CNIG MJSP nº 45, of 9 September 2021, published on 24 January 2022. Remote work only, for a foreign employer or foreign clients. Work for an employer in Brazil is outside this visa. The means test is US$1,500 a month from a foreign paying source, or US$18,000 in bank funds, not both. The first residence period is up to one year and may be renewed once for the same period. The same remote work may also be done as a visitor, within the visitor stay allowed for that nationality. Family members are not added to this application. A spouse or partner, children, parents, grandchildren and siblings use the separate family-reunion visa under Lei nº 13.445/2017, art. 37. Resolução 45 sets no extra monthly amount per dependent. At the Consulate-General in Porto the fee schedule of 1 June 2026 charges €100 for a digital-nomad VITEM XIV for most nationalities, €215 for the United Kingdom and €290 for the United States. From 1 September 2026, temporary visas for nationals who do not need a visitor visa are issued electronically through the Sistema Consular Integrado. Someone already in Brazil can ask the Ministry of Justice for the residence authorization. There is no nomad tax exemption. A temporary-visa holder who stays more than 183 days in a 12-month period is taxed as a resident from the following day, including on foreign-source income, under the ordinary progressive income tax. After entry, register with the Federal Police. Consulates instruct holders to do that within 30 days. The CRNM issuance fee is R$204.77. An in-country residence request also pays R$168.13 to process the authorization. The label VITEM XIV is also used for other temporary visas, including retirement, which is a different resolution.
