This is a prolonged residence permit for a digital nomad (Foreigners Act art. 24(1)(23) and art. 24c), not a visa category of its own. A Type D visa under art. 15(1) — valid up to six months, stay up to 180 days, multiple entry — is required first, including for visa-exempt nationals, and is filed in person at a Bulgarian mission for the applicant's place of permanent residence. The residence application is then filed in person at the Migration Directorate. For an application in 2026 the income test is gross average annual income of at least 50 times the 2025 minimum monthly wage: BGN 1,077, which is EUR 27,533 at the fixed rate 1.95583. The figure is annual, not a monthly salary. From 1 January 2027 the same formula uses the 2026 wage of EUR 620.20, which is EUR 31,010. There is no separate savings test and no extra income amount per family member. The permit is issued for one year and may be extended once, for one further year. It cannot by itself reach the five years of lawful residence used for permanent residence. Company owners (more than 25% of a non-EU/EEA/Swiss company) and people providing remote IT services personally must not work for, or provide services to, persons in Bulgaria; personal service providers also must not carry on freelance practice (свободна практика) in Bulgaria, and must have done the remote work for at least one year. Employees must be hired by an employer outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. No degree is required. State fees for the principal, in euro: Type D visa 100, residence filing 5.11, and 255.65 when a permit of more than six months and up to one year is granted. An adult family member pays their own Type D visa of 100 plus a family-reunification grant fee of 76.69, and is exempt from the 5.11 filing fee. A draft to raise the Type D fee from 100 to 120 was still only a public consultation on 5 October 2026. USD figures use the ECB euro reference rate of 1.1186 on 2026-10-09. A tax resident is taxed on worldwide income. The general annual rate is 10%. Residence for tax purposes is more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or a permanent address, or a centre of vital interests in Bulgaria. There is no nomad exemption. Bulgaria has been in Schengen since 2025; the national visa and residence card support short stays in other Schengen states, not a right to live there.
