Residence visa for non-EU retirees and people who live on their own income, such as pensions, rent, intellectual property or financial investments. The 2026 means reference is the mainland minimum wage of EUR 920 a month, net of social-security contributions, with 50% for another adult and 30% for a child. The visa is four months. The residence permit is two years and then renews for three years.
There is no statutory savings balance. The applicant shows the income and that it is available in Portugal. The annual figure is twelve times the monthly reference, not a separate yearly test. The consular fee is EUR 110, about USD 123 at the ECB rate of 1.1206 on 9 October 2026. Children under 6 are exempt. A temporary permit can be cancelled for an absence of six consecutive months or eight interpolated months during its validity. New nationality applications from 19 May 2026 need 10 years of legal residence, or 7 for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries. Travel medical insurance is required unless a bilateral health agreement waives it. Once the permit is issued, the holder may take employed or self-employed work. IFICI is a separate tax registration.
