The temporary resident student visa is for foreign nationals who will study in Mexico for more than 180 days at an institution in the national education system. The residence authorization lasts for the documented course or study period and can be renewed annually while the student continues to meet the requirements.
There is no single national tuition rate for student visa holders. Tuition and fees depend on the educational institution and programme; the visa sources require the school’s acceptance letter to state the tuition cost. Public and private institutions set different charges, so no country-wide USD range is reported here.
Paid work is not automatic. A temporary resident student may request INM authorization for paid work only for higher education, postgraduate study, or research; the work must relate to the field of study, be supported by an employment offer, and have the educational institution’s consent. The INM’s current student procedure does not authorize independent work under this route.

After arrival, the student must obtain the residence card from INM within 30 calendar days. The student status gives multiple-entry rights and family unity, but accompanying family members are documented under temporary residence rather than student residence. INM says a temporary resident student cannot change directly to permanent residence; student residence also does not count toward naturalization residence. Students may change to ordinary temporary residence if they independently meet one of the stated grounds. The consular visa is an entry document and is distinct from the residence card.
