Notes and caveats

This is the two-year residence route for applicants originating in Latin America or the Iberian Peninsula; other adult applicants generally use the separate five-year standard residence pathway. Temporary absences do not interrupt residence unless they exceed six months in total during the two years before application. The statutory absence threshold is more than six months cumulatively; the 180-day field is an approximation of six calendar months. SRE's 2026 fee is MXN 9,500. At the DOF rate of MXN 17.9780 per USD on 2026-10-08 this is approximately USD 528. SRE's procedure page describes 40 business days after the INM opinion, while its annual costs page says a maximum of three months after that opinion. Current official SRE pages also give conflicting exam formats; exact current format is not resolved. The statutory renunciation is a declaration and oath; Mexico recognizes multiple nationality, but loss rules for naturalized citizens apply in specified circumstances.
