Essentials

City
Genalguacil, a white village in the Genal valley, Serranía de Ronda, province of Málaga, Andalusia. The town hall is at Calle Real 3, postcode 29492. 2 11 31
Population
352 inhabitants on 1 January 2025 (177 men and 175 women), the official municipal-register figure. The Andalusian statistics sheet lists 363 for 2025, the census count rather than this register total. 1 8
Currency & Banking
Euro (EUR). On 19 October 2026 the ECB reference rate was 1 euro = 1.1225 US dollars, so about 1 US dollar = 0.89 euro. Some shops ask to see a passport before taking a card. 6 5
Tap Water
Safe to drink. The Spain travel guide says tap water is safe, and that some southern supplies are desalinated and can taste more mineral. People in those areas often choose bottled water because it tastes better. 5
Power
230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko). The travel-guide emergency number is 112. 5
SIM Card
Buy a prepaid SIM at an Orange or Movistar shop in Ronda or Estepona. Movistar says a Spanish prepaid SIM must be registered with a DNI or NIE. Orange Prepago 10 is 10 euros for 28 days (80 GB with the current extra 20 GB, 15 GB of EU roaming, physical SIM or eSIM). Movistar Prepago Plus is 10 euros for 28 days (60 GB) and Prepago Premium is 15 euros for 28 days (240 GB). 3 4 11
Banking for Expats
Cards are widely accepted in Spain, and some shops ask for a passport before taking a card. Most ATMs add about 2 to 7 euros on top of the home-bank fee (figure dated February 2023), except Unicaja machines. 5
Accommodation
Fotocasa asking rent in October 2026 was 17 euros per square metre. A 40 square metre flat at that rate is about 680 euros a month, and a 60 square metre flat about 1,020 euros. These are calculations from the index, not quotes for available flats. 14
Cashless Friendly
Cards are widely accepted in Spain, and some shops ask for a passport before taking a card. A tip, if you leave one, should be handed over in cash. Tipping is not required. 5
Short Term Rentals
Rural Sierra Sol, about 20 metres from the square, charges 50 to 60 euros a night for a double and 60 to 75 euros for a triple, with a three-night minimum in high season. La Posada del Recovero, Calle Estacion 4, was listed from 52 euros a night, with free wifi and a desk in the room. 17 18 24

Corporate Tax
The general corporation tax rate is 25 percent. Newly created companies pay 15 percent in the first tax period in which they make a profit and in the following period. That 15 percent rate does not apply to equity companies or to new companies that belong to a group. 34
Dividend Withholding Tax
Dividends are savings income: 19 percent on the first 6,000 euros, 21 percent to 50,000, 23 percent to 200,000, 27 percent to 300,000, and 30 percent above that. Dividends paid to a non-resident are withheld at 19 percent before any treaty rate. 33
Tax System
Residents pay Spanish income tax on worldwide income. Non-residents pay tax on Spanish-source income only. Residence criteria include more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, or having the main base or centre of activities or economic interests in Spain. 33 41
Highest Income Tax Bracket
The 2026 state withholding scale reaches 47 percent on general income above 300,000 euros. Each autonomous community adds its own scale. The Spain tax profile records an effective top near 54 percent in the highest regions. A separate Genalguacil percentage was not on the page opened. 33
VAT
21 percent standard VAT (IVA). A 10 percent reduced rate covers some food, new homes and tickets to live culture. A 4 percent super-reduced rate covers bread, milk, books and medicines. 35
Controlled Foreign Company (CFC) Rules
Yes. Spanish residents are taxed on a foreign company when they hold over 50 percent and the foreign corporate tax is under 75 percent of the tax that would be payable in Spain. 36

Property Transaction Tax
In Andalusia, a resale from a private seller pays transfer tax at 7 percent (since 28 April 2021). A home you will live in, worth no more than 150,000 euros, is 6 percent. A new home bought from a developer is charged VAT at 10 percent, not transfer tax. 37 35
Attractive Tax System for Digital Nomads
Many passports can stay 90 days in any 180 without a visa. A longer stay for non-EU remote workers uses the international telework visa, which asks for means of at least 200 percent of the Spanish monthly minimum wage. Qualifying newcomers, including teleworkers, can opt in on form 149: employment income is withheld at 24 percent up to 600,000 euros, for the year of the move and the next five tax years. 9 39 38
