The foreign or stateless spouse or civil-union partner of an Italian citizen may apply after two years of legal residence in Italy or three years from the marriage or civil union while living abroad; each period is halved if the couple has children. The marriage or civil union must be valid and registered in Italy and remain in force through the grant decree. Applicants need certified Italian at B1 level and must take an oath after approval.
The Interior Ministry sets a 24-month decision period, extendable to 36 months. The applicant must swear allegiance within six months after notification of the grant decree; citizenship takes effect the following day. The €250 Interior Ministry contribution is separate from any consular document, authentication and oath charges. Cohabitation is expected for applicants living abroad; the Brussels consulate permits an explanation and supporting evidence when spouses have separate addresses. Statutory revocation after grant is limited to specified final convictions and applies only if the person holds or can acquire another nationality.
