A foreign spouse of a Dominican citizen may apply for naturalization after at least six uninterrupted months of residence in the Dominican Republic under Article 1(d) of Law 1683. The Ministry’s current service requires a valid residence permit, records confirming residence and migration movements, a citizenship examination and interview, and an oath. Applications begin online and require an in-person appointment; the Ministry estimates four to six months after the file is complete.

Notes and caveats

The wording of Article 1(d) of Law 1683 is gender-specific (a foreigner married to a Dominican woman), while the 2024 Constitution recognizes marriage to a Dominican citizen as a nationality route and the current MIP service is offered to foreign spouses of Dominican citizens without a gender restriction. The Dominican Constitutional Court rejected an unconstitutionality challenge to Article 1(d) in TC/0029/15. A separate paragraph of Law 1683 gives the Executive discretion to naturalize some foreign women married to Dominican men without a residence requirement; this is not represented as the ordinary six-month application rule. MIP's online portal lists RD$29,200 including review, application, exam and oath; a separate MIP information page and the government service catalog still list RD$1,500 application plus RD$5,000 oath. The recorded USD equivalent uses the Central Bank reference purchase rate of RD$61.0606 per USD on 2026-10-07. Passport rank and visa-free count are carried from the current country record and were not independently updated because an official index table was not directly accessible.
